COB Burling was a real decent guy. Always ready to listen, never heard him raise his voice once. He used to enjoy a cigar every now and then and when he went to see the Captain when he had one burning he'd leave it at the top of the ladder so as not to bring it into his stateroom. And without fail, after talking to the Captain, the COB would forget about the cigar he left buring outside the stateroom ... the Capt. would pass the word for the COB to come and get HIS cigar.
